There are many agents competing for business in this industry. You may even be competing for business with your co-workers, broker/boss, and the numerous other brokerage firms in your area.
In my opinion, you must define your goals, have a plan, and be "optimistically realistic". I'm not sure if I am the first to use that term, but I came up with it and it is my outlook on life and business.
If you are a Broker, you must decide do you want to work indepedent and alone, or have agents at your firm. Or do want to affiliate with a big firm. If you are a salesperson you must decide which brokerage firm you want to work with. There are many options. Training, support, and commission splits are several big factors.
My guess is that most big brokerage firms owners are members of C.A.R., N.A.R., and a local MLS. Is this required for you? If you work for one of these brokerage firms it may be required. This is where dues come into play. Some agents find dues to be prohibitive or at least a major challenge.
I do not know of many alternatives. At the moment my firm is independent and hence agents can work at my firm without having to pay dues to MLS, C.A.R. or N.A.R.
